Happy 09.09.09! I think it's a pretty cool day!
I made these turkey burgers several weeks ago, and we really liked them! I started with a turkey burger recipe from Allrecipes. The recipe calls for 1 ½ pounds of ground turkey. I only had a 1 pound package of ground turkey, so I scaled the recipe back, except for the French Onion Soup Mix. I used the entire packet, and unfortunately they were a bit salty. I suggest using only ⅔ of the packet if you have just 1 lb of ground turkey.
These burgers were really flavorful and juicy. It was a little harder to tell when they were done because they were so moist!
The original recipe for these burgers does not include BBQ sauce or Pepper Jack cheese - I just jazzed them up a bit. I like the idea of stuffing cheese inside, just like with these Mozzarella Stuffed Turkey Meatballs. These would have been great with Onion Strings on top!

Make the Meat Mixture
Stir together the seasoning in a large bowl.

Add the ground turkey and stir until fully mixed. Chill the mixture for at least 10 minutes.

Form and Grill the Burgers
Fold each slice of pepper jack cheese in half and then in half again to make a stack of 4 squares.

Form the meat mixture around each stack of cheese. Using oil or cooking spray on your hands will help prevent the meat from sticking to your hands.
You can cook the turkey burgers indoors in an oiled grill pan or outdoors on a gas grill or griddle. I've made these with both a grill pan and a Blackstone griddle.

Adjusting the Sodium
To make this recipe with less sodium, consider replacing the soy sauce with Worcestershire sauce or water. You can also reduce the amount of the French onion soup mix.
Another option is to keep the seasoning the same and bump up the meat to 2 pounds of ground turkey. This may be more convenient, as many brands of ground turkey come in 1 pound packages.
Using BBQ sauce will also add salt, so if you're sensitive to salty food or avoiding it due to dietary restrictions, you can leave the sauce off the burgers.
Serving Suggestions
Like I said with the Chicken Parmesan Burgers, we sometimes have burgers without buns, but you can certainly serve them with buns and all the typical toppings.

Gluten Free Option
Use gluten free soy sauce or water to make a these burgers gluten free. Please check the packaging on the French Onion Soup Mix to make sure it is gluten free. Consider serving these burgers without buns or with gluten free hamburger buns.

Pepper Jack Stuffed Turkey Burgers
Ingredients
- 1½ pounds ground turkey
- 1 packet dry French onion soup mix (1 ounce )
- 1½ tablespoons reduced sodium soy sauce (or Worcestershire sauce or water, see note)
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 egg
- barbecue sauce (optional)
- 6 slices pepper jack cheese
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix together the soup mix, soy sauce or water, garlic powder, black pepper, and egg.

- Add turkey and mix until just incorporated. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes.

- Fold each slice of cheese in half, then fold those pieces in half again.

- Form the meat into 6 patties, while inserting the cheese in the center, making sure it's covered on all sides. Oiling your hands with a little bit of cooking oil or cooking spray will help prevent the meat mixture from sticking to your hands.
- Preheat a grill pan, outdoor grill or griddle lightly coated in cooking oil. Place patties on the grill. Cook until the internal temperature reaches at least 165°F. Add barbecue sauce while grilling, if desired.
