These Easy Apple-Shaped Cupcakes are perfect for a Back-to-School treat. Use a boxed cake mix and canned frosting or your favorite homemade recipes. So easy to make!

These cupcakes are a fun back-to-school themed treat I made for the girls after their first day of school.
I found these adorable free printables for the stem and leaf to place on top of a red paper plate, the ruler napkin holder, and the pencil and notepad decorations.
I printed them on white cardstock and cut them out.

We also had some small pretzel twists and red Sixlets leftover from the Wizard of Oz Party.
Ingredients
- Red cupcake liners, ideally red foil liners
- 1 boxed cake mix, prepared into cupcakes according to package directions
- 1 batch Easy Vanilla Buttercream or canned frosting
- Red sanding sugar
- Tootsie Rolls Midgees
- Green M&M's or Skittles
Bake and Decorate the Cupcakes
Bake the cupcakes according to the package directions. Allow to cool completely.
Using a small icing spatula, spread a thin layer of buttercream or frosting on top of each cupcake. One at a time, hold a cupcake over a plate and sprinkle the sanding sugar over the frosting. The plate will catch the sugar that falls off so you can reuse it on the other cupcakes.
Unwrap the Tootsie Rolls, and place one, standing straight up, in the center of each cupcake for the apple stem. Add two green M&M's or Skittles next to the Tootsie roll to serve as the leaves.

Storage
Store the cupcakes at room temperature in an airtight container until ready to serve.
