These Star Wars Cupcakes with Pretzel Lightsabers are so easy to make and perfect for a Star Wars Birthday Party.

My daughter had a Star Wars themed birthday with her friends when she was in Kindergarten. She's now in 6th grade, and I'm finally sharing the cupcakes I made for the party!
These cupcakes are so easy to make, and kids love the little lightsaber pretzels!
Supplies
- pretzel sticks
- dark blue candy melts
- blue sanding sugar
- red candy melts
- red sanding sugar
- your favorite boxed mix or homemade cupcakes, such as chocolate
- your favorite buttercream, such as Easy Vanilla Buttercream
- disposable piping bags
- large star tip, like 1M
You can make cupcakes from a boxed mix or your favorite homemade recipe. I like to use the cake recipe from Chocolate Layer Cake, which is very similar to Two Layer Chocolate Cake. They only take about 15-20 minutes to bake.
Make the Pretzel Lightsabers
To make the lightsaber pretzels, first line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
Next, melt dark blue candy melts in a drinking glass at 50% power in the microwave, stirring after each 30 second interval, until melted. Check the packaging of your candy melts for specific instructions for that brand.
Holding a pretzel stick on one end, dip the stick into the blue candy about ⅔ of the way, then remove by lifting straight up. Shake off excess candy and immediately hold it over a clean bowl. Shake on the blue sanding sugar to coat the candy melts.
Place the pretzel stick down on the parchment lined cookie sheet. Repeat with the rest of the pretzel sticks until you have enough blue lightsabers for the number of cupcakes you plan to decorate.

Repeat the same process with the red candy melts and red sanding sugar.

Allow the candy to set at room temperature while you frost the cupcakes.
Decorate the Cupcakes
To frost the cupcakes, fit a disposable piping bag with a large star tip, like a 1M. Fill the bag with buttercream.
Pipe a double layer swirl of buttercream on top of each cupcake.
Place a blue lightsaber pretzel at an angle across the center of the cupcake, pressing slightly to adhere to the buttercream.
Place a red lightsaber pretzel crossed on top of the blue, pressing the red dipped tip down into the buttercream. This gives the illusion of the two lightsabers combatting.
Repeat with all of the cupcakes.

Storage
Store the assembled cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Bring to room temperature before serving to soften the buttercream.
Gluten Free Option
For the lightsabers, use gluten free pretzel sticks. Glutino makes some delicious gluten free pretzel sticks. Check your packages of candy melts and sanding sugars for possible gluten contaminants.
I love this chocolate layer cake recipe made with Bob's Red Mill Gluten Free 1 to 1 Flour Blend. I also love King Arthur brand of gluten free cake mixes.
