Star Wars Cupcakes with Pretzel Lightsabers

Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
Melt dark blue candy melts in a drinking glass at 50% power in the microwave, stirring after each 30 second interval, until melted. Check the packaging of your candy melts for specific instructions for that brand.
Holding a pretzel stick on one end, dip the stick into the blue candy about ⅔ of the way, then remove by lifting straight up. Shake off excess candy and immediately hold it over a clean bowl. Shake on the blue sanding sugar to coat the candy melts.
Place the pretzel stick down on the parchment lined cookie sheet. Repeat with 11 more pretzel sticks until you have 12 blue lightsabers.
Repeat the same process with the red candy melts and red sanding sugar until you have 12 red lightsabers.
Allow the candy to set at room temperature.

Fit a disposable piping bag with a large star tip, like a 1M. Fill the bag with buttercream.
Pipe a double layer swirl of buttercream on top of each cupcake.
Place a blue lightsaber pretzel at an angle across the center of the cupcake, pressing slightly to adhere to the buttercream.
Place a red lightsaber pretzel crossed on top of the blue, pressing the red dipped tip down into the buttercream. This gives the illusion of the two lightsabers combatting.
Repeat with all of the cupcakes.

Store the assembled cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Bring to room temperature before serving to soften the buttercream.
