Butterfly and Dragonfly Sugar Cookies with Royal Icing are decorated with a wet on wet technique to create little heart designs.
I mentioned in Halloween Cookies post that I had a few sets of decorated sugar cookies to share.
I made this batch for my cousin's little girl Hailey's 6th birthday at the beginning of September. Why did I wait so long to post? I guess you could say I've been a bit busy and forgot!
My aunt gave me this neat dragonfly cookie cutter, and a new butterfly, so I made a variety of shapes. I used the same principles as the original Butterfly Cookies, but this time I decided to do letters and numbers - her name and age to be exact.
To do this, I used what is called a wet on wet technique with the royal icing which results in little hearts. First, you outline the design and let that dry for at least 1 hour. Then, you flood the inside with a solid color. Next, use another color of flood consistency icing to make dots and run a toothpick through the dots to create heart patterns. I did this to create Hailey's name and age (6) in little tiny hearts. I also did some single dots to make single hearts, and some dots within dots, like in the photo below of the yellow circles with the black circle inside. I added a few white sugar pearls on some of the cookies in the wet flood icing.
Hailey's favorite color is pink and my favorite color is purple, so I used those and threw in some yellow to compliment. I love the look of the black outline and design with these cookies - I think it really accentuates the colors.
To make the pattern show on the bottom wings of the purple and yellow butterfly, I piped lines of flood consistency icing on freshly flooded section and then dragged the toothpick from the outside in many times to create that pattern. This is a technique that I used for these Easter Cookies.
Each cookie is unique, so I'm trying to show all of them to give more ideas for how to decorate them.
As always, these cookies were so fun to make and a true creative outlet! Hailey loved these and so did the rest of the family. Look for more sugar cookies to come!
