These Chalkboard Brownies are a fun and tasty Back-to-School treat as a snack on the first day of school. They are so easy to make!
When my oldest started Kindergarten, I began the tradition of having a little back-to-school party after the first day of school. We started celebrating with a School Bus Cake, suggested by a friend who made them for her children.
Now that the girls are not riding a bus, I have had to come up with other back-to-school treats. I found something similar to these brownies on Pinterest last summer. They were so cute I had to make my own version.
My kids loved these so much that they are asking for them again this year. It doesn't hurt that the brownies are huge!
I've kept this recipe simple with a boxed brownie mix and canned frosting. You can swap those for your favorite homemade recipes if you prefer.
Ingredients
- 1 brownie mix, prepared according to package directions
- 1 can chocolate frosting
- 1 tube white icing
- Red gel food coloring
- Green M&Ms
Materials
- Mini loaf pan or rectangular pan
- Disposable piping bags
- Small basketweave decorating tip, like a Wilton #47
- Small round decorating tip, like a Wilton #5
Bake the Brownies
Bake your brownies according to the package directions. I borrowed my mom's 9-section brownie pan that is similar to a mini loaf pan for these so they would all be exactly the same size. I made sure to spray each well with plenty of non-stick baking spray.
Once the brownies are baked, cool them in the pan for just 10 minutes before unmolding them onto a cooling rack to cool completely.
If you're making a normal pan of brownies, use aluminum foil overhangs underneath the batter so you can easily remove them from the pan to a cutting board and slice them into rectangles.
Decorate the Brownies
Place some of the chocolate frosting in a piping bag fitted with a small basketweave tip, such as Wilton #47.
Pipe the "wooden" chalkboard frame around the edges of each brownie. To achieve the woodgrain look, make sure the side of the tip with the teeth is facing up when you pipe.
Place some of the white frosting in a piping bag fitted with a small round tip, such as a Wilton #5. Pipe on the math equations.
Color a small amount of the white icing with red food gel. Place it in a piping bag with the tip cut off (or in a sandwich bag with a corner cut off) and pipe the apple shapes on the lower right of each "wooden" frame.
Carefully place 1 green M&M at the top of each "apple" for the leaves.
Gluten Free Option
Use a gluten free brownie mix. The other ingredients are naturally gluten free.

Chalkboard Brownies
Ingredients
- 1 brownie mix (prepared according to package directions)
- 1 can chocolate frosting
- 1 tube white icing
- Red gel food coloring
- Green M&Ms
Instructions
Bake the Brownies
- Prepare a mini loaf pan by spraying with plenty of non-stick baking spray. If using a square or rectangular pan, line the bottom and sides of the pan with strips of aluminum foil that overhang the tops of the pan so you can lift the baked brownies out of the pan easily to slice. Spray the foil with baking spray or oil.
- Bake your brownies according to the package directions.
- For a mini loaf pan, allow the brownies to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then carefully unmold them and place on a cooling rack to cool completely. If using a baking pan with aluminum foil overhangs, allow the brownies to cool completely in the pan, then use the foil to transfer the brownies to a cutting board. Slice into identical rectangle shapes.
