Nut Free Old Fashioned Date Bars are a version of my grandma's Date Nut Bar recipe without the nuts. These chewy bars are a favorite around the holidays!
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 13x9-inch cake pan with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, mix the ingredients in the order given, stirring after each addition. The batter will be thick.
¼ cup butter, ¾ cup granulated sugar, 2 eggs, ¾ cup flour, ¼ cup powdered sugar, ¼ teaspoon baking powder, 1 pinch salt, 2 cups chopped dates, ¼ cup honey
Using an offset spatula, spread the batter evenly into the prepared.
Bake for 25-30 minutes, or longer, until the top is completely browned. The longer the bars bake, the chewier they will be. If underbaked, they will end up soft. When the top is browned, it will no longer look gooey.
Cool for at least 20 minutes. Use the parchment paper overhangs to lift the bars out of the cake pan and place on a cutting board. Cut into 32 bars.
½ cup powdered sugar
Roll each bar in powdered sugar to coat completely, shaking off excess.
Store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature.
