Onion Strings

A simple coating for sliced onions that are fried into perfectly crispy Onion Strings. These are great on top of or alongside your favorite burger!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 whole large onion (sliced very thin)
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 cups all purpose flour (or gluten free flour blend)
  • 1 scant tablespoon table salt
  • 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 - 2 quarts Canola oil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • Place sliced onions in a baking dish, cover with buttermilk, and soak for at least an hour.
  • Combine dry ingredients and set aside.
  • Heat oil to 375 degrees F in a Dutch oven. Grab a handful of onions, throw into the flour mixture, tap to shake off excess, and plunge into hot oil. Fry for a few minutes and remove as soon as golden brown. Season with salt and pepper as desired and serve immediately.
  • Repeat with remaining onions.
